Merging two .avi's?

I have two video's that we took in London on my digital camera..there about an hour each but because I had limited space on my camera it only allowed me to film like an hour at a time. The second video follows straight on from the first and someone is speaking in the background. I would like to merge this into one .avi but I want the audio to follow on and not turn out like one of those chineese movies with english audio over were the mouths move then the sound comes out.I tried this with movie maker (Yes I know n00bish program but I had nothing better with hand) and that was the effect I got. Is there a (preferably easy to use :) ) program that can do this?

As my signature suggests, you can pop over to VideoHelp and find exactly what you need.

There are two ways to go abot this:

1. Easy and quick - hits the pocket - Avi Joiner.
Extremely easy, no loss of quality and works :swear: quick.

2. Easy, free but slower (and needs a bit of learning) - VirtulDub. Bsicaly using the append function the
program takes the two streams and then 'creates' a new
stream. There is a slight loss (depending on the encoder used) of quality
as VirtualDub re-encodes.

With both approaches there should be no loss of synch. A word of advice - to complete the second option quickly you really need a powerfull CPU. PIII, celleron and lower AMD's, do not really like VD and vice versa.....

I wouls suggest a visit to videohelp as I have not done avi joining for a while and it could be that a new tool has been 'forged'. Never hurts to take a look. Also very good guides are provided for all tools.

I have virtual dub...but only ever used it to split my movies nerver to merge them and Im not sure how to tht. I was readin the documentation but couldnt find anything on it. Ill have a look at the other program. Thanks sabashuali

Would that still work if the avi used different codecs? Like a DivX merging with an XviD video?

I only used VirtualDub once or twice and all streams were all the same.
You see, the problem is that the AVI extension is very misleading. As you rightly noted there are different types and levels of compression. The best way is to check. I have to say that I do not particularly favour VD as I found it tricky to fathom and rather slow. However, it is rated one of the best tools on VideoHelp.

I cannot beleive I forgot Avidemux which, I am sure, can join as well as split and is free, easier than VD and quicker.

Nic, I am not in my Linux at the moment (where avidemux is installed) but as soon as I am (probably tomorrrow), I will have a quick refresher and post some instructions, if you want.
In the meantime, download Avidemux (for windows.....) and have a play. It is quite freindly...

Nic, if you still have the two avi files, could you try this

Go to start > run type "cmd".

Now go to the directory the two avi files are in.

e.g "cd X:\path to directory"

change the drive letter as required

and try this "copy /b *.avi output.avi"

I think it should work fine, make sure the files are in order e.g 1.avi 2.avi etc

Ive not got the first files I was trying to merge but Ill try that later as I have some more files that I can merge Ill edit this post with my results
