I swear by iTunes...nicely laid out, looks good...smart playlists are a nice feature. Also consider WINAMP...you can get skins for it and its a great player, albeit lacking MP3 ripping until you buy the pro version. Avoid RealOne Player like the plague.
For playback I use VLC . Its great not come across a format it doesn't recognise yet. I don't rip any CDs so Im afraid I cant help you there.
Why alternative? Maybe if we knew why you are looking for an alternative we could suggest the best solution....? I swear by "Media Player Classic" which comes bundled with the K-Lite codecs pack. Will play anything you chuck at it..
i've found itunes buggy with some sound card but just a select few i use wmp9 for all my mp3, winamp for all my other audio files and media player classic with all my videos
I use winamp for audio files and WMP for Videos .... loaded K lite codec pac never had any problem with playing any format. Winamp is very easy to use, fast and if you learn its shortcuts.......there will be nothin like that for you.........like searching a particular song or putting in a que. you can add lots of plugins to it like DSP plugins.....I am using Enhance really change the exact voice to high quality. there are so many features in it...........nd i am sure ul love it.
Back in the prehistoric ages, before I knew about Linux and open source, I was an avid user of Realplayer. Back then, I used to accept the spyware, constant ads and horrible user licenses. Realplayer is actually a really good media player. But it's so easy to get turned off by all the rest that comes with it. By default, Realplayer sends information back to it's servers to aid content. In reality they are simply spying on you. It is possible to disable this, but that's not the point. Personally I use amoraK, and I haven't looked back since
