If you've been holding off on buying a PlayStation 2 because you're waiting for the release this fall of the PlayStation 3, some people think Sony wants you to know they'd still like you to throw down your credit card to buy a PS2.

And to make it more palatable, the thinking goes, Sony will soon reduce the cost of the PS2 to $129, down from $149, and might even go so far as to drop the price all the way to $99 within in a year.

This is the word from Colin Sebastian, a senior research analyst with Lazard Capital Markets.

In a research note Sebastian sent Wednesday, he predicted that the hardware maker would slash the initial $20 off the PS2's price tag even before E3, next month's video game industry blowout in Los Angeles.

Sebastian also hints that Microsoft may drop the price of its original Xbox, though he notes that "the impact of an Xbox cut would be limited due to declining supplies of the console."

Sony, by comparison, plans to continue selling the PS2 for at least four more years.

In any case, with the specter of the PS3 upon us, it's comforting to know that Sony could still have some interest in reaching out to the folks who aren't hard-core gamers and who might well be happy with a console that is years old yet still provides one heck of a punch in game power.
