I am doing a full install of winxp sp2 on to a new hard drive. When I start to format the hard drive should I select " NTFS system files or NTFS quick." What is the differents? Please help me if you can. Thank You.

well the difference is: format totally destroys the data on the drive, whereas quick format destroys the structure (all your folders) the files remain but are renamed "filexxxx.chk" (x's refer to changing numbers) it is possible to restore a quick formated drive, but its a pain in the arse (especially if you've got a multi gig drive, and ALL your files are in the root directory) the same can be achived with scandiksk but its rare

The difference is whether the drive is formatted all up front or later while you're trying to use the system. Unless you have special time constraints, do a regular NTFS format. Otherwise your system will perform badly until it's totally formatted.

When winxp starts to format my hard drive it gets to 20% and then I get to another window that say "Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk maybe damaged."

I switched out hard drives and installed a brand new "Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3802110A 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100." The computer is a "Dell Optiplex gx1 350mhz pentium 2." The original hard drive that came with the computer is a "Maxtor DiamondMax 6800 INT 6GB Ultra ATA/33 HDD" Is the Seagate the wrong type for this computer? Or is this hard drive damaged? Please help me. Thank You.

P.S-I can install windows on the Maxtor DiamondMax 6800 INT 6GB Ultra ATA/33 HDD

The HDD may defective, but the cable could also be bad or the jumpers could be set incorrectly. It could also be a drive geometry problem in your BIOS.

i've had this problem before, basically i return the HDD to the manufacturer after running "Powermax" downloaded from www.maxtor.com then enter the error code powermax gives you and maxtor will issue a returns number, or try a low level format (LLF) and tell maxtor you have tryed a LLF

to correct your current problem, enter BIOS and set HDD detection to auto

I have went into the BIOS and changed the HHD to auto and still the same problem. But I installed a Western Digital 80g e-ide and windows installed with no problems. I think the Seagate must be damaged. I did notice on the plastic corner of the Seagate was chipped. That is how I received it. Do you think trying the Seagate on another motherboard would make any differents? PLease help. Thank You

I ve faced this problem too. But I never bother to know what the problem is? What I do always is quick NTFS format and I never faced any problem.. I ve done this to the maind HDD of my computer and usb one as well. But still if there is a problem with that then I would prefer doing NTFS format only...

I have already tried selecting "NTFS Quick and NTFS" it stills locks up during 20% of formatting. Then winxp tells me that the disk might be damaged. I tried useing seagate formatting software and still the same problem. I notice when I received the hard drive it was slighty damaged on the corner were you plug the power supply into. I have already sent it back and wait for a new one. Thanks for all the help.

Seatools did not say anything because it would lock up at 90% when I would scan.I will see what happens when I get my new one. Thanks for all the help.
