Blu-ray is a technology which uses a blu-laser instead of a red laser to record data to disc. The blue laser can be focused into a smaller space than red laser and so can fit more data onto disc than DVD. The PS3 uses blu-ray discs as the preferred medium for games and movies.

Blu-ray is supported by Sony, HP, Dell, Apple, Hitachi, Ld, Mitsubishi elec, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Thomson, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner Bros and EA games (wikipedia source).

HD-DVD is its competitor, which also uses a blue laser to read/write the disc. It is used in the Xbox 360 and is backed by Microsoft, Intel, Universal and Paramount as well as some other movie producers.

Technically, blu-ray offers more data storage.

By the time new technology will be in the market~! It sucks actually, coz its always been high price for the common people when a new thing comes out.

If you talk about me, I am realy laging behind from new tech. Recently I've bought a 2nd Hand Ricoh DVD writer, which is not even dual layer. (its just for the sake that I've a DVD writer.hah!)

Blueray all the way. Much more capacity than HD DVD and hey if it comes inside every PS3 that's a huge bonus concidering stand alone players will be around $1000.
Just to clarify xbox 360's currently do not have HD DVD drives, it's MS's plan to allow for users to by a separte drive later on...hardly a winning tactic.

[ot]Well this one seems to have worked financially for them so far:
Laugh at this new "superior" technology and advertise against it.
Make a proposal to aquire the company, failing that send some of Gate's chunky guys to "rough up" their CEO.[/ot]

I sincerely hope that blu-ray wins the format war.

It's because of Blue-ray that the PS3 has been delayed. Sony is waiting til Blue-Ray becomes a standard before it releases the PS3. Obviously there is no point releasing the PS3 as Blue-Ray compatible if HD-DVD becomes the norm.

All I can say is this: Most, if not all of Sony's recent propriatory technology has bombed. Be it Minidisk, ATTRAC or UMD. Nothing makes me think Blue-Ray will be any different

Sony aren't waiting for blu-ray to become a standard, Sony are trying to make it the standard themselves. Its not Sony's own technology either, there are other companies developing it.

You also don't seem to realise that HD-DVD also uses a blue laser, so in many ways its similar to blu-ray. And why should HD-DVD not "bomb"? Keep up to date mega ;)

I used to think for awhile at least that the first console to the market would hold a big advantage over other consoles. But Look what happen to the dreamcast . The xbox 360 is a cool gaming machine as of present .Plus its also comes a year before the Wii or Playstation3 . But it was the games which usually decide which machine is best for each gamer. I never owned an xbox wanted to get one only because of halo and halo 2 . But I already have halo for the pc and whenever halo 2 comes out for the pc I'll be sure to get a copy . But I really have to say the HD-DVD VS Blu-Ray DVD is a waste of money . Don't get me wrong I'm all for the future of gaming and video entertainment . But for goodness sake how many people will actually buy a add on HD-DVD player for the xbox 360 . I think and MS thinks (they aren't going to say it in public) they screwed up by releasing a year ahead instead of waiting to add a HD-DVD drive internally to the Xbox 360. Sony isn't going to talk alot of BS they are putting their money where there mouth is on PS3. Blu-Ray will make or break Sony . People will complain about the PS3 price tag but I would rather put my money towards a system in which I have to keep buying add-ons to get the max out of a consoles. PS3 (built in hard drive , Blu-ray built in , and backwards capablity to PS1 ,PS2 without downloading a BS patch to play ). I think the smart consumer would save more money in the long run with PS3. I have yet to talk to anybody who could call me out on those facts alone.

80-90% of the consoles sales are depends on their games Library. I will never rush to buy a new thing, let it enter into market and see what problems people will face in the first. Like in the PS2 there was lots of problems with their DVD drive. So cant say it can be happen with this new BD DVD.

[ot]Sorry to be pedantic about this but the blu-ray discs are just known as blu-ray discs, not blu-ray DVD as DVD is a copyright of the DVD Forum. [/ot]

Sony are being very bold with the whole PS3, new technology isn't perfect as yields with the Cell manufacturing process isn't great, and compatibility with PS2 games isn't 100% (very good, but not all). Yet the industry wouldn't be what it is today if companies didn't take a leap and embrace technology which is possible but limited by commercial factors. It could be the downfall of Sony if something bad happens, but if it goes well it could seriously destroy the Xbox360 market share.

Kudo's to Sony for waiting long enough to get it all together and get a nice crop of exclusive and impressive games at launch. However we can hardly count out the 360 (not saying any of you did) yet, apparenty the add on HD DVD drive plus the 360 premium version still costs less that a full featured PS3, that's not too shabby I guess.
However MS isn't planning on releasing any games under this format as far as I've heard so it's really just for movies. So if HD DVD fails it won't be a huge loss as MS isn't loosing money bundling a bunch HD drives with their 360's, but just making it an option instead, that they can discontinue at any time easily.

Sony is gambling with the Blu-ray Drive big time . I think they have faith in their product if you don't have 100 percent faith in your product well how are your customers going to want your product. Sony will be untouchable If Bluray takes off and thats no BS .

MS not waiting to put an HD-DVD drive in the 360 I wouldn't call a mistake, in fact I'd say it's an advatage that they stuck with a standard dvd drive.

Sony is going to be losing money hand over fist on the PS3 while still being more expensive than even the premium edition of the 360, and while Sony will have to keep the price up while to amortize the costs associated with developing Blueray, Microsoft will be able to continue to drop the price of the 360 as they are using standard dvd which is now a commodity product rather than a premium product.

Unless Sony and it's developers are able to use Blueray's storage size to it's advantage I don't see it being a major selling point. After all when was the last time you saw a console be able to outperform a standalone dvd player for image and sound quality, I don't see that changing anytime soon. Anyone who really wants to watch HD-DVD or Blueray movies are probably going to buy a standalone player.

Very good points. But what I feel it really comes down to is who'll win the standards war between HD DVD and Blueray. If Blueray wins Sony should be just fine as then they can boast about HD movies and games all they want and keep the sales up. If HD DVD wins Sony will either have to switch drives which would probably never happen or just go along making games and fogetting about movies. It's always a gamble but I think MS played it right with the drive being an add on due to it's uncertain nature or success.

HD DVD and BD DVD, most of their winning depends on the best computer companies like Dell, HP etc.. Sony has launched its BD DVD in its laptop already........
What I am thinking about it is that it this kind of war continues and a couple more companies come out then we might end up with 4 or 5 different types of drives in our computer. I believe, there should be only one winner from both the drives........doesnt matter who it is but it has to be one. So other company stop making the device.
