    is the partition (1.99Gb) FAT16 or FAT32 ?
the FAT32 to NTFS converter may not be installed, you can use third party software to convert from either FAT16 or FAT32 to NTFS (Partition Magic, software from Acronis.com)

You'll need to format the unallocated space to use it. Somehow, the filesystem got borked, which is odd if you were using NTFS, since it's more resiliant than FAT32/16. 2k and XP natively support NTFS, and will allow you to format your drive as such.

If you've just done a fresh install of Windows and haven't installed many programs, then you might boot off the XP disc, and go through the install again. This time, delete all the partitions, have the install format the entire drive as NTFS, and be on your merry way.
