I acquired a large lot of raptors and need to get rid of them. They are broken and I have had no luck in repairing them. Does anyone know how to repair a hard drive? Would anyone be interested in buying them?

    Thanks.

Most of the drives won't spin up when given power. Some drives click rythmically. A few even burned up! A lot of the drives have the black plastic piece that the SATA cable fastens too, broken off, i didn't test.

I have tried a few times to switch circuit boards on the drives with no luck. I got only one drive to be recognized by windows. :(

    Thanks for your time.

do you want the data on them ? if yes there is more you can do

try wiggling the power cables on the drives that won't spin up

    with the clicking drives
cos doing this could destroy the drive, hold drive about 7" above your desk and then drop it

    the reason this works is:
the clicking is probably the platters sticking on the read / write head

then recheck them cos a few may work
    :swear: stupid but it works

I don't need any data on the drives. I will try those suggestions. I haven't got to the level of disparity yet.

    Thanks for your help.

At that level of hardware failure, I'd either RMA (if they're under warranty -- though Western Digital does have a 3-year warranty) or failing that, dumpster.

after you've droped them, try freezeing them for about 3 weeks, then if that doesn't work put them in the oven on about 100 degrees (old money degrees)

the reason this may work is:
different metals expand and contract at different a temp, so if the read / write heads are stuck on the platters (only moving part in a HDD) a rapid change in temp would make the part expand or contract

i know how :swear: stupid this sounds, but if the drives arn't working, & you dont want the data what have you got to loose, a drive thats knackered anyway

Also just a note - you won't be able to sell them on here as the rules state that you have to have a minimum of 50 posts to do so.

Take them apart, and use the shiny platters as cup holders.

I'm with AT: get an RMA from Western Digital. It might cost a little for shipping, but given that these drives are around $150 new, I'd certainly look into that.

If there's data you want, then some other suggested methods might work as well, but you may not be able to RMA those if you do something like drop them.

If you can find a way of selling them (Ebay for example) I'll buy them. Please email me at [email protected] to discuss further
