In order to do a fresh install of windows 98, First you will need a windows 98 boot disk (with CD-rom support) and a copy of windows 98. Next you will have to fdisk the drive and format it so you can install windows. Now each computer has different settings,Like different video card/modem/sound and so on. So The only way to get everything to work right would be to do a fresh install.. You can use other parts from other computers/Like cd rom / floppy drive and others... You will just need some drivers for them,Thats if windows don't pick them up.
do you mean boot from your IDE slave device, is that correct ? please correct me if i'm wrong jester45 to boot from the slave device you need to enter the BIOS and set first boot device to IDE 1 (from the default IDE 0, for primary slave, IDE 3 for secondary slave) EDIT: thanks for the recommendation roy92
what i was thinking of doing is installing windows 98 on the drive i have now then when i get the new computer booting that computer from it and then installing windows 98 again on the new drive i dont know if that posable or what also i was thinking of when i get the new computer take the hardrive out of it at putting it on my old comp to sore files on it then takeing the drive i have now and install windows to it then just use that as a bott drive the new and old are the same drives from what i was told and just so u know that hte new computer cant use cds right away becuase the kid sold it but i have a comp that can use cds so if i have to do anything with cds it has to e on the old one also i forgot to post it but the old drive i have now has files that i dont want to erase to put windows on it but i could put 3 drives on the old computer and transfer them the files i cant realy delet becuase they are some movies that i downloaded at it took forever becuase its 60 GB of it
1st paragraph: yes, if i understand correctly 2nd paragraph: you can swap CD drive between new and old 3rd paragraph: on a standard IDE setup you can configure up to 4 devices (master and slave on primery channel (IDE0) & master and slave on secondary channel (IDE1))
It sounds like what you are trying to do is more than it is worth. What are the specks of this new computer you are going to get? Why would you want windows 98 on two drives? You can have more than one drive and use the other drives just for storage..Is one of these computers going to have a cd burner in it?You could just burn all the stuff you want to keep onto a disk. Too me it sounds like you are making more work for yourself than you need too.
yes i would do what but have about 40 cds worth so that out of the picuter i need to keep the files on a drive drive as im doing all this
