At last im upgradind to AM2 and im gonna get me some ddr2.

What are brands should i consider? I know about corsair(obviously) and kingstone but are there any other solid brands that deliver. Has anyone heard of A-Data. Im not into oc'ing. I would love 2bg of corsair extra low latency but im on a tight budget so i want to start with 512mb for now.

What are the different kinds of ddr2 and what should i go for. There are so many that im... stumped to be honest. I figure its best to go for 800mhz but then there are also 800 ecc, whats the difference

Unless you have a FX processor, i'd stick to 667Mhz RAM for now because of the price to performance ratio. Brands i'd recommend are Corsair, OCZ, Geil, Patriot, Mushkin and G.Skill. Corsair is the best in my opinion but the others are still very good brands to consider.

A-Data's cheapo junk, I have some of that and it's budget ram in the worst way possible. Poor timings, no overclocking potential (though that doesn't matter to you), no frills. For what it's worth it hasn't failed me at least.

Patriot seems to have their act together in the DDR2 department right now, but Corsair is probably the biggest player, though you have to pay a premium for a 2 gig set.

Don't bother with ECC, it's just for servers and stuff where accuracy is everything and it checks for minute errors. It can actually hurt performance in real world common day activities as it's just wasting resources checking for nothing. It's also expensive in comparison usually and a lot of motherboards don't really support it. Stick with no ECC.

Im on a horrible budget so performance v cost is everything. Problem is that i live in the twigs ( SA in short ) and most of the reccomended brands are not available. Corsair is sweet but it costs.

So would it be worth it to get this A-data crap for cheap and get 800

Buy a A-data A-Data® DDR II-800 512MB 240-Pin Desktop Memory 6-Layer PCB, Life Time Warranty, Retail Package, W/Heat Spreader!!! Online from Digital Planet.

Or get the Corsair "value select". Is value select a bad thing. And is buying a-data going to slow down game performance

It really depends on how much more the Corsair costs. If it's less than 15 or 20 more I could see going for the trusted brand. But if it's a lot more the A-data probably won't give you any issues. I can see going for it if the selection is limeted. I made the mistake of not waiting untill I really had all the money I needed to built a system to my origional specifications so I had to cut corners.
To be honest it probably wouldn't make a difference between to two as far as performance goes. Value select is just fine, you're really not getting a bad deal but it's just that extra feeling of getting a quality proven brand, rather than one that most people ignore.
It might be worth checking out these reviews to sway your opinion one way or another: A-DATA Vitesta 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM System Memory - Retail at Newegg.com
