    hi,
over the past few days my computer has been randomly restarting and when i get back on it says "your computer has recovered from a serious error"
it does it every 15 minutes or so, sometimes it does it as soon as i get back on and other times it can go an hour or so before it crashes.

and if that wasnt bad enough. yesterday all my files were wiped from my computer when i turned it on, and everything has been reset to what it was like when i first had my computer, most of my programms have gone aswell, i was left with only the internet and a few other basic things.
what could be wrong with my computer and how could i fix it.

    First, welcome to HWF.com Imbigbear,

It's possible you've got infected with a virus, sasses.exe or variants of that wormvirus caused systems to reboot after 30 seconds, further damage a virus can do is also delete files from your harddrive.

Try booting windows into safe mode; to get XP into Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

This start windows with minimal resources, this might eliminate windows to run infected files upon startup. Then scan for infections using anti virus software and other cleaning tools and see if this clears up the problem.

Here's a link to a Microsoft site about Sasser and it also covers computers restarting by themselves.

If all else fails, you might have to reinstall windows completely. So be sure to make backups from important data if you can.

    Good luck,

    Marcus

I had this problem when i bought a new carpet, i found the problem was all the new loose fibres from the carpet were blocking my p.c's fans.

Here's what i did, switch off the pc, leave it plugged in at the mains to ensure it's earthed.
Then clean out the fans, i used a small artists brush, along with the vacuum cleaner extension nozzle held close, to capture all the dust etc.

    Hope this works.

Yea! this sounds like a virus. Or it could be something else. How long has it been doing this ? any power outages lately ? Do you have a recovery disk or a windows setup disk...If this has not gone passed 5 or 6 days , then you can try system restore,If it has gone pass 5 or 6 days, then you will need to do a full recovery or do a fresh install. You could try to run your antivirus in safe mode to see what happens,But then you still might not be able to regain your lost files and folders...let us know what you decide.

LOL. Before we try to solve a problem we are not even sure what is, why don't we ask imbigbear if he's looked in the 'Event Viewer'? Why make this more harder for ourselves then it needs to be, and run the risk of giving some very bad advice?

Go to the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Click on 'System' down the left hand side and look at the 'error' entries.
