I know there are similar entries for this similar subject but I would like to ask again and find out if there was ever a real solution to this problem and if so what it was. When I try to upgrade win 98 with Win ME it goes through 66% of the load and then stops with the following error: Application Error SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in Module VERX.DLL at 0002:24AE Close or Ignore If you press Ignore nothing happens If you press Close it terminates your load Can someone please refresh what (if any) the answer was to fix this loading problem?
This can happen when you install Windows Me on a computer that has Windows Media Player 9 installed on it. the easiest way i know of to fix it is: restart with an EBD in A: boot minimal then type Code: cd windows\system then Code: ren wmp*.dll wmp*.old.dll then Code: ren wmp.ocx wmp.old.xco then Code: cd \progra~1 then Code: ren window~1 wmp9 remove boot floppy now upgrade to Me then reinstall WMP with WU
Neither 98 nor ME has any support from MS any longer, so there are more and more open vulnerabilities on both platforms as time goes on. Ultimately, I'd recommend just migrating to a different OS. If your PC is too slow for XP, try Xubuntu ...it's free, easy to use, and fast even on old, outdated hardware. On the other hand, if you must run Windows for some reason, you might consider Windows 2000, which is almost exactly the same OS as XP, except it's still supported by MS (at least for the moment) and it uses far less resources than XP.
good point, i don't use MS OS anymore, on kubuntu, not easy giving up MS but worthwhile, no AV, no firewall, no spyware, no major security issues (like MS)
Are you using an upgrade disk,Or a setup disk? I just installed Win/Me last week on an older computer with no problems,But it was a setup disk, not an upgrade disk.. It sounds like your disk is corrupted or bad. How old is this computer? What are the specks? On most older computers,It is best to upgrade to windows 2000...Thats most PIII's and up. This Last PII would only run 98 or win/me...
Windows ME is not as stable as windows 98. There is no reason to use ME, all the software that works with windows Me works with Me. They both still use the old windows 9x series of kernels. If you want a better system then upgrade to xp home edition. If you are hell bent on getting ME working then format your C: drive and do a fresh install. Upgrading an OS almost never works cleanly. A fresh install is the best option when changing OS.
XP will not run on allot of older computers,Thats why you have two choices, Win 98 or Win/Me.. Win/Me is a little more better on there Graghics and allot better to look at. I am running Win/Me on one of my older Pc's and it has never had a problem in 5 years. I guess it is all up to the computer on what flavor it likes.
