hi people. Im tottaly new to this forum but i'm gonna try my luck and ask for advise!! the problem:- I have been given a broadband router that i want to set up permanently on my daughters pc. we have a broadband isp and a modem that we currently use to acsess the web. i have uninstalled this set up from the desktop pc. I want to keep this original modem set up on my laptop. but i want the new router set up on the desktop upstairs. I have managed to install the router fine but i can't connect to the web! i think ive got to tell my pc to use this new router but i cant find where to configure!! the pc is running on windows xp home edit. my laptop (widnows 2000) has an option in internet options that allows me to choose a modem!! however the (xp) doesnt seem to have it, or i cant find it anyhow!! Appologies if i sound vague! but i hope you see my propblem and fingers crossed someone can help!! thanks in advance!! kev
i think this is a coniguration issue, check the routers manual (if you have one, or provide us with the routers make and model) there are a few things you need to enter into the routers web confiurator
thanks donkey, the router is a BT 205(no paper work, just an installation disk that wants me to connect using BT isp which i dont!!) i have both the earthnet cable and the usb cable. allthough im not sure which to go with!! kev

Thankyou all for your replies. I have managed to get the router up and running! Dont ask me how, but after doing loads of searches on the web and following lots of different combinations of number crunching in the dos menu's and web configutators (thanks donkey you got me on the right trail) I managed to get it going. thanks all again kev
Ive currently got it set up using the USB. not through choice though, just simply that was what i managed to get the router working through! do you recomend i use the ethernet cable instead? is it just a case of swapping the cables or will i have to do the whole config' again? kev
yep to be honest, i don't know (like you said) try just swapping the cable from the USB to an RJ45 cable (without disrupting the power to the router) try it, if it doesn't work just go through config again (you may need to reset the router) don't ask me how or why ethernet is both easier and quicker the setup / use, cos i dont know, anybody else know
According to the Setup Guide in the previous post. There is nothing like that I've found. As Dave suggested, Just plug the cable into your LAN card and see .
