the three best about linux are:
    • Free
    • Free software
    • Free help (from HWF)
a linux system usually installs itself to 1 HDD (harddisk drive)

first linux is much easier to run & use than most windows users think (and HWF will be here to help anybody) i in no way consider myself an expert with linux (personally I've only being a linux user for about 8 months, but what i have learnt is invaluable, it's as hard as you want to make it, personally i would like to just know how everything about linux, without going through the learning process
if i can move over to linux anybody can, cos I'm disabled & i have brain damage,

mega can confirm that he's put me right on a few stupid things,
linux has many better features than windows like WM (Window Manager, this is basically the UI (User Interface) personally i prefer KDE (K Desktop Environment)
originally i chose Mandriva but mega suggested Kunbuntu, which i now love, for die hard win users, you be pleased to know that Wine can run about 80 - 90% of Win programs, failing that you can actually run win on top of linux through a program called VMware (VMware creates a virtual computer which can run any OS (Operating System)) i would class myself as a masochist PC user, before coming to linux i used XP (and XP never even lived until WPA (Windows Product Activation) locked the computer (30 days) Kubuntu is still going strong (admitidly, i killed a few installs of Kubuntu, but that was my fault)

anyway lets get started: "root" = 2 things
    • root user (is able to do administrative stuff)
    • root directory / folder (similar to C: in XP)

things change from 1 linux distribution to another, i think the best way to try linux is to burn the downloaded .iso file of a Live CD, then just change your BIOS to boot from CD, then isert the Live CD you created and reboot and linux will run from the CD (just make sure you download a Live CD version)
