Hi I have a very old server based network which is mainly used for our Sage Accountancy program, it really needs replacing..So I want to buy a new server so 3 users can access the program at the same time, which is what we do at the present. Can anyone tell me the best place to find what I need (I'm in the UK) Also can you explain what it means when microsoft refers to their Small Business server STD 2003 inc Service pack 2003 & 5 Cals (No operating system) Thanks Tony
I'm not sure I totally understand; is the program actually going to run on the server, or does the file just need to be stored centrally?
It depends really on how you share Sage, coz as you now you can share Sage buy just enabling the sharing on it and enable the file/folder sharing of the Sage file. With this type of sharing, you can just use a regular PC with a Win XP as the OS and just do backups of the file for security, this is the cheapest way since you only have 3 users. Another way is, serving the Sage database using MS SQL, you can build a PC/server or get from Dell. If you are going to use MS SQL, cheapest MS Server you can get is the MS Small Business server 2003 PREMIUM. Small Business server STANDARD 2003 1. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 2. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 4. Microsoft Shared Fax Service Small Business server PREMIUM 2003 - All package included in the Standard edition plus the ff: 1. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition 2. Microsoft Internet and Security Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 3. Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003
Thanks for all the replies to my question....perhaps I didn't give enough detail of what I am trying to do.... I want one computer/Server in Room A where all the data is saved, I also want a PC in Room B & another in Room C. Then I want to be able to enter data from the PC's in Room B & C to the Server. The Ideal situation is that I have three users one in each room entering and saving Data. I hope what I am asking makes sense. What I do know is that Peer to Peer is no good for my purpose as it will not update the data on all the computers . It may help me If I new the answers to the following questions 1. What is the difference between a PC and a Server 2. Am I right in saying that to run a Server Based network I would need a operating system like Windows XP plus additional software "Windows Server 2003" installed on the Server and also on the PC's Thanks to all of you for your help Best wishes Tony
I dont know the exact defination but I can tell you that you can install the server on any PC. Nope, only server installation is required on the main PC which u wants to be a server. Other computers requires the operating Systems. According to me, you dont require a server software. You can set up a P2P network. Put your software on one main PC on sharing and let others access from that PC. So now imagine, if everybody is accessing the data from same place then the data is updating automatically....does it makes sense?hah:
A server is a system dedicated to... serving something. There are many types of servers, but it sounds like you're talking about a File & Print Server. Believe it or not, the best File & Print server for Windows networks isn't a Windows server -- it's Linux! That means you can get better performance, security and lower cost but keep all of the compatibility. Plus, it's super-easy to have a working Linux server in about 15 minutes, look over here: http://www.hardwareforums.com/all-one-network-appliance-10253?referrerid=432
