Hi, im making a gaming pc at christmas and im trying to pick all the parts. which cpu should i go for, the AM2 2.6ghz dual core or intels 2.4ghz conroe core? ive been told off many of my friends that AMD cpu's are better for gaming but i dont know if thats true.
that was true[ot]AMD's used to beat Intel's to death with a pointy sh1t covered stick, LOL[/ot], but with Intels latest offering (i think it's called Intel Duo core 2) your now better of with an Intel
Thanks donkey. For how long will the conroe core be good for though, as ive seen these new quad cores that intel has brought out, but at £700 i dont think ill be getting one of them
Dual core seems to be the way for go for general usage at the moment. I really can't say how long Intel's C2D will be the king for in such a fast moving industry. I would estimate another few months at least before AMD mounts a serious challenge in the high performance chips. I doubt quad-core will give you any tangible benefits over current dual core/single core.
If you have dual core at 2.4ghz, in reality do you have 4.8ghz of cpu. for example, if a game requires 2.2ghz cpu to run, is the dual 2.4 way above that? I read that the idea of dual core was to be able to do two proceses at once, but can both cores do the same thing.
No, it doesn't work like that. Dual core will give you about a 50% increase in performance in applications which have been designed to take advantage of dual core CPUs. Apps like Adobe Premiere and some of the latest games can do this, but definitely not all of them. In fact, in games which do not take advantage of dual core, you may get slightly better performance with a faster single core CPU than a dual core CPU. However, in general usage dual core has a bigger advantage in responsiveness generally.
Thanks addis. so if you were to make a gaming rig over xmas, specifically for gaming which cpu would you go for?
the only reason Intel has brough out dual & quad core CPU's is because they can't make a single CPU (single core) go any faster i don't blame you, that's a lot of £££ for a CPU, but to answer your question: i don't know, sorry:doh: Edit: thankies Addis
I know this isnt to do with cpu's but does anybody know if computer stores such as scan and micodirect (UK) will have january sales? Also do they do student discount.
they probably will have jan sales, as for student discount, you'd be better talking to your tutor (if anyone will know who gives student discounts, they should), also concider Novatech they seem v well priced[ot]microdirect are not the cheapest supplier[/ot]
Well in gamings, Graphics card is more important thing then a processor... C2D processor is recommended for your future safety coz that will allow u to update things which will come out in the near future........Basically U can run games very well with a single core P4 CPU as well with high end PCIe graphics card nd 2GB RAM....
I would disagree that P4s run games very well. The P4 was outclassed by the Athlon64 for gaming performance, but now the Core 2 Duo has the best performance.
Can u please give me the reason as well.....I wrote wat I read in some previous threads but I dont know the exact reason or something.......
