Hello, I am having quite a problem with my computer: After a while of idling, or in the middle of a game, the screen will go black, but the light on the monitor stays green, indicating there still is a signal.. i think. This is on my 21' CRT. So i tried another monitor, an LCD , while this is happening (the green light no picture business), and i get the message 'Mode not supported'. I see the video card fan is still going, and I'm really not sure what is wrong. Also, sometimes when i try to turn the computer on it won't react... but a few mins later as if by magic it turns on by itself. If you could help me out that would be most excellent, the computer i am on now has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 onboard video, and it is painful to play any decent game on it. Thanks in advance!
Whats your computer specs? I think maybe the video card could be overheating, but then it may be a power supply problem, on your video card make sure you plug the extra power cable in if it has one, usually molex or pci-e power connector depending on your mobo. Use your main video card again, and try to get some temperature readings of it.
Try an ATX reset. this is done by removing all cables from the PC and holding the power button in for 30 seconds. Until we know your specs, that's all I can suggest for now. As Willz said, it may well be a power issue. This is likely since you've mentioned the PC sometimes not turning on. Good luck, Mike
ATX reset :s, i am unfammiliar with that, removing all cables from pc, is that in remove,ATX switch, hdd led, power led cables or everything?
It needs to be done with all internal cables set up as you normally would do (Front panel especially!). It's the external cables and leads you need to disconnect. It might not work, but it's worth a try... Many cases at my workplace where customers have issues with starting their PC up can be resolved by an ATX reset... It even surprises me when it works. thought I'd suggest it because I've not seen it mentioned on any other threads that I've read... I agree with Willz there, although in my experience whenever a graphics card has cooling issues and overheats, it doesn't stop the computer from posting, rather the rest of the PC would begin to work away yet the screen would remain blank (Usually monitor light turns orange). though it is indeed possible that heat generated from the graphics card could affect the mobo temperature to the level of automatic shutdown, depending on how low the auto shutdown temp is set to and how close the mobo temperature sensor might be to the GPU Also, have you tried checking if your PSU has an LED to indicate that it is recieving power? A good test to perform would be to shut your PC down (if it hasn't already done it by itself ) and watch this LED. Watch it for a while, and if at any point it turns off or dims significantly, you might have a PSU serving its very last hours and not being able to keep up a steady current. Mike
Ah, once i had this problem were my USB Memory stick was broke, and my computer wouldent boot up past the bios screen, i took everything out of the back of the computer except the esentials, that an ATX Reset?
Close, because overcharged or leaking capacitors can cause initial symptoms of USB devices making the PC unable to boot into windows. An ATX reset drains the capacitors a bit (When you press the power button it sends a small electric pulse to let the motherboard know it needs to power up, and the capacitors are used as part of giving the PC it's initial oomph (if you will)) so that they are either not full enough to leak, or not about to overload. Other symptoms of overloaded capacitors are random shutdowns, inability to boot, general system instability, and sometimes graphics glitches... So, by holding the power button in for 30 seconds or so, capacitors are drained a bit, and the symptoms may cease.
I rekon the capacitors on the I865PE (DFI Infinity) mobo was the cause of it been faulty then, always shut down, alot in games, sometimes just random, and said the cpu was 52 degrees when it was infact 32 degrees. and then i turned the computer on again, it just shut off.., on and off, on and off all the time, so i upgraded in the end.
