Yes that is possible. Hard drives and optical drives use the same cables for power and data. You do need to make sure that the case has a place to mount that additional hard drive, otherwise you'll have to be creative :)

The adapter you have is the correct one. Check if it works with a lower screen resolution and the adapter is connected properly. If that fails, it might indicate that the adapter is faulty.

I would suggest the DVI-D adapter. You'll get much better quality because the signal is already digital from its source. VGA outputs an analog signal, which results in poor quality (especially in HD resolution). I'm not even sure if VGA supports HD in the first place.

That's correct. Could you make sure that the cables are still connected properly to the hard drive and the motherboard? Are you able to try a different data cable for your hard drive?

Looks like the TOC table on the device is corrupt. Your best bet is formatting the USB drive.

If you put back the old graphics card, does it work fine then? In that case it's most likely to be caused by insufficient power from the power supply (the graphics card consumes so much power that it can't power up the drives correctly).
