I watch the RSS feed of recent posts to see if anything interests me but its nearly always a re-hash of an already-asked question and with my work life being so busy now sitting on my computer not really doing very much no longer happens.

I wouldn't pay anyone to do it for you - especially the first time, what's the point in playing the game if you don't do it yourself.

Download and install speedfan - and let it perform an in depth analysis of the hard drive, if it says the health is low get the data backed up pronto, sounds like your drive is about to die - then you'll need a new drive and a fresh install :)
Hey mate, not wanting to rain on your parade but unless you've done all this in a clean room even if you get the drive going again you'll not get the data back, not once heard of anyone successfully dismantling a drive and re-building it successfully in 10 years of computing.

Have you updated your network adapters drivers recently? I had something like this till i rolled them back (it was stuttering the whole computer!) and all is sweet again now :)
