Well first off, you should have bought a pci express video card, because new chipsets do not support agp, so there goes the future. I got an MSI and I really like it. Gigabyte is also a good, cheaper brand. Any of those two will do but I personally prefer the nforce chipset.

Try a known-working hdd in your system and try your new hdd in a system that you know works to see if the channels on your new board are working or if the hdd is in fact the problem.

In theory both 4x256 and 2x512 work. However, you may encounter stability issues if all 4 sticks aren't identical, which is your case since you should get PC3200 memory to take full advantage of your system's capacity. Personally, I prefer 2x512.

Try a different cable and try a different channel. For the power, try using a cable that has nothing on it and only connect your hdd to it. Check if the jumper is placed correctly.
