    PSU voltage question

I agree, the chances of the PSU failing a HDD are pretty small IMHO. The 5v supply may be tad over because it will drop through the wiriing. Also you don't say how you measured these voltages - was the PSU loaded....I hope so.....otherwise you'd get strange figures I believe. I suspect it was...

Need help picking a UPS for my home setup.

The issue here, for me, is that the information you provide does not suit the selection-needs for the UPS. "Home" set-up doesn't really define it. Background FWIW: 1),There are UPS that run in parallel with the Mains, so these provide enough time to back-up and shutdown...is this your...

Powering ATX Motherboard on 12V Battery

    - - - - From what I'm reading the pair of you are likley to result in a smoking ruin. - - - - - You must get some expert help for your robotic project, pref from someone that can see what you're doing. You probably need a car battery to provide enough Umph at start-up and to keep the supply...

    Help!

There are two big issues, here IMHO. 1), even if the drives are swappable they will recognise theya re not with the original motherboard, etc. so this will fail to fire-up. This is done to protect the computer "brand" although many think it is more to do with forcing customers to buy...

    Old DELLWin XP

System Background: My Dell Optiplex GX150 is quite old and after updating to XP,SP3 (which appears to be a continuous On-Line friend)..the Dell hardware monitor says the HDD controller is faulty. I've checked the internal leads, but suspect it may be wearing out and/or a component failure in...

HD Purchase Advice (long story warning)

Sorry guys, I guess this is a situation where it's best to pay-up......at least you'll have a working notebook ( check with Dell, this is true ). Any other route is fine if you know what you're doing, but trying to fix something like this is a route to unhappyness...IMHO. However, good luck...

    Help please

Confusion here, as I read this: If you are backing-up files (of photos) then any partition is just as likely to fail as the original drive. Ideally burn a CD/DVD, or use an external HDD with folders that are no larger than 600MB ( for CD) and then when you get a CD burner ( eg USB-connected)...

    Classic case

If it's received a knock then it is likely to have a shorter life, even if the data is OK right now. It all depends upon your outlook on life and part availability. The disc is probably not that expensive, compared with yr time and value in getting it reinstated. Maybe a lesson in leaving...

Good all in one photo printer

In the UK, try "Computer Shaopper" - they review printers regularly - I think they rec. an HP ( the cheaper model without the LCD ) about £60, as I recall, during 2007. However, bear in mind "Best-Photos" may compromise the text quality. That 's there isn't one that's best - and the next...

    Problem with postcards (Brother MFC640-CW)

Could it be the sensing switch? when you have 30 it is too heavy? One of those annoying aspects of Computing, but without trying an alternative (same) printer it's difficult to separate cause and effect. Why don't you ask the manufacturer? ( It might be a known fault/driver fix etc.)

    New Cartridge But Prints Green

Probable true - Printer makers have a reputation to maintain, unfortunately this converts into the price the market will stand. Alternative suppliers don't have the same objectives - just that it's good enough and cheap. However, some believe all inks are using similar technology and it's...

    New Cartridge But Prints Green

Hi, FWIW I read somewhere that Magenta ( the red ink) is by far the most-likely ink to go dry - perhaps this cartridge was a bit old, or stored somewhere warm. What on earth compelled you to buy a Genuine "Lexmark" cartridge, when most refils are available from Tesco? (at considerably lower...

    Wireless Router Needed

Maybe Looks the right part for me - also using Virgin(now) broadband - comes with a modem and connects to the pc using, RJ45 -----RJ45 connector, I've been told it's a non-crossover version and have bought a 15m extension lead. (Temporary fix.) These routers - presumably they came with...

    E-mail spam . . . and general grumps

Thanks ferg, I suspect your right, but I don't understand yr suggestion that I'm sending out the spam - it would take at least four times as long ( 8 minutes?), as when I receive it(2 minutes)....and I've noticed nothing. If someone is "spoofing my email address" then I can understand getting...

    E-mail spam . . . and general grumps

I'm having some daily spam. . . . . and my ISP just suggested I open one and ask them to stop - now that sounds pretty dumb to me! - In IE5, I thought I'd stopped downloading emails until I click on them (so I look at the sender and subject before opening), but my ISP tells me the email must...

    Hard Drive reading

I see a UJ flag below yer name so I guess you could buy PCpro - this month ((Aug2007, p115)),has some advice concerning HDD Recovery...but in a nutshell unless it's valuable I guess you have to consider it's lost and start over, since recovery appears to be a £500-option and you can buy new...

i feel so stupid asking this

Kastang Spot-on advice...I've never bought a controller (I think they take up a 5.25" bay, unless built-in) - Do you set the temperature and the fan takes care? Or is it purely monitoring the processor temp (via some Mbd monitor routine?) ...and you have to set the fan speed. In other words -...

    Vista OEM

Be wary of "OEM software" unless you are an accomplished hacker...MS is trying to force home users to buy very expensive software and one way of doing this is to block updates for OEM installs - I have no experience of this personally, but reportedly, it appears to be the case....should yr mbd...

Why people use dual OS systems

This Poll has produced some comments! I'm using Win98SE mostly because it does what I need. I have a second PC which has Win2000 already installed, but no recovery disc so when it croaks I'll have to start all over. Also I run (from time-to-time) Ubuntu currently 6.06 (the long-term support...

    which printer to get

Donkey42, Did I understand that fromyr posted "name" - should I drop the 42, then? I should read yr preply closely but may I comment on a couple of issues? You may be right about the cost per page, but to achieve this the initial cost is greater - so it depends upon you using a lot of...
