GMail uses AJAX extensively for it's services (as do a lot of Google's services) - it may be that the script isn't running properly / communicating with the server.

We could go over the fundamentals of good coding practice, but that would take far too long and go off on too much of a tangent - good coding takes a good understanding of the code first. But I agree that it should be mentioned from the start of someones learning. And taught.
