    why is Ubuntu so popular

You have raised some good points. I don't think all of them are right, but I can understand why you might have come to those conclusions. I can't see anything bad about Ubuntu "dumbing down" the desktop, or the GNOME desktop in general. What they have done is kept the configuration and...

Caught a nasty Ubuntu Gutsy bug

I am not one for drifting too far away from official Ubuntu packages, but thanks anyway. That being said, I might check out your custom kernel in my test Gutsy VM at some point. I'd be interested to compare the performance.

    Looking for backup solution

Rsync wasn't working properly with the NAS at first. It completed ignored what files had been changed and just backed up everything. Then I noticed the "Windows Compatibility" option in Grsync  Works like a treat now

    Bizzare Issue

I am not sure which component is making the funny noises. To be honest, I have been so busy this week I haven't even had time to check. I think i'll leave this off til the weekend when hopefully I might have some spare time. Thanks for you help so far though, Ashton.

    Bizzare Issue

I have now confirmed this by reading the FAQs on the Asrock website. What a silly policy! It doesn't explain why I can't acheive 200MHz even after I force the memory to DDR400 though. The processor is an Northwood 3.2GHz HT Pentium 4 and can definately do 800MHz (200MHz). I am going to...

    Looking for backup solution

Hey guys I have bought myself an Hawking HNA1 Network Storage Caddie and wacked an 250GB HDD in it. To my suprise the Hawking device formats the HDD in ext3 which is good. I can access the NAS via SAMBA or FTP. I would like to set up a backup solution where only new or changed files get...

    Bizzare Issue

The old memory is DDR333 so it isn't suitable with the new processor, unless I really want to underclock my processor (which I don't). Been really busy lately man. However I am gonna be spending a bit more time around these parts from now on :)

    Bizzare Issue

My motherboard is an Asrock P4VM890 and is "supposed" to be able to run at an 200MHz bus speed. It's a socket 478 motherboard and is compatible with Williamette, Northwood & Prescott up to 3.4GHz. The motherboard is based around an VIA Northbridge: VIA® P4M890 & Southbridge: VIA® VT8237R Plus...

Caught a nasty Ubuntu Gutsy bug

I recently upgraded my graphics card from an nVidia Geforce FX 5200 PCI to an Geforce 7200 GS PCI Express card. The major reason for this is that I wanted to use PCI-E and also the fact that the FX cards suck. However to my dismay, I have discovered that there is a major bug with the nVidia...

    Kde4

As far as I am concerned, the ultimate Linux distribution is the distribution that doesn't require you to use the command line "at all". This is not a personal preference because I find the command line very effiecient. But for the every day man, using the command line is not an option. On this...

    Why does windows suck?

Don't get me wrong, there is no doubt that some people get confused by NTFS permission. But if you apply permissions logically and don't explicitly use the "deny" attribute then it becomes much easier. I feel as if I am the Windows defendant in this thread, and while that may be true, we all...

    Kde4

Does it bother you that KDE4 is taking an "gnome approach" by reducing the number of configuration options? One standout change that really gets my goat is the fact that Dolphin is the new file manager and Konqueror is now reduced to just a web browser (by default). Personally I have always...

    Why does windows suck?

Meh, NTFS ACLs are not really that difficult. They are quite logical and powerful. I've never had any problem with the ACLs myself. I'd be interested to know more about these advanced ACLs for Linux though. How can I implement them into my distro?

    What is your favorite Film

Tis a good film I'll opt for Withnail & I as my favourite of all time. Other favourites of mine are A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner and of course, the First Matrix Film (cos I am a geek :D )

    Kde4

Has anyone here tried KDE4 yet? I must admit I ditched KDE recently, mostly due to Kubuntu's poor implementation of KDE and the fact that I really wanted to use the Ubuntu family, regardless of the desktop environemt. My curiosity gets the better of me, and KDE is still close to my heart even...

    Why does windows suck?

There are some 3rd party applications that require administrative rights but I'd consider those "legacy". The NT kernel has been around long enough now for developers to realise that a) computers are used by more then one person and b) not all users will have administrative rights. What really...
