137GB barrier memory has been forgotten

is there a way i can get past the 137GB barrier after i have installed xp pro? installing service pack 1 supports i have read, does it automatically see it after installing sp 1? if not, is there a way around this without reformatting

thanks a lot for all your help guys, nothing i asked went unanswerd, my pc is up and rolling smoothly, and i owe much of it to everybody on this forum. thanks again :)
 
Yes, if you install SP1 (Or better yet, service pack 2), you hard disk will be detected it's true size.

Then if you go to Start>>Control Panel>>Administrator Controls (Classic View)>>Disk Management, and then you can format the rest of the disk space to make it useable!

However your hard drive manufacturer should have a "Big Drive Enabler" or "Large Drive Enabler" in the downloads section.
 
in disk managment, the c: part says, 127.99GB NTFS Healthy (system)

the other part says, 21.06 GB Unallocated

do i right click it then hit partition? dosent say format, it gives me a choice for either creat primary partition, or extended partition. How do i get it to be one whole volume for C: rather than a seperate partition?

If you don't want to reformat first, you will need third party software, such as Power Quest Partition Magic. Otherwise, just format it as a seperate partition. But, on the bright side, since XP is actually NT, you don't have to assign that partition a drive letter. You can mount it to a folder instead... i.e. C:/Temp or something.
 
If you want to have more than 4 primary drives, you need to create an extended partition. As there is only 20gigs left, it probably isn't worth it.

Therefore, just make a new partition - you are given the chance to format during the creation process.
