Hello everyone, i hope the way i explain things won't get everyone wound up, i might not be very technical. Last week or so i installed the latest windows update, but after restarting my pc it kept saying '80 conductor cable not found' at the very beginning, and windows won't load. So i looked up the cable on the internet (on another pc obviously) and decided to go and buy one, but when i installed it my pc kept trying to boot instead of loading the black windows XP screen with the loading bar. I tried to see if i could do anything in dos to help my pc recognize the new cable, but i couldn't do anything (being a non-pro at this) I really need to update to an 80 conductor cable so i must know what's causing my pc not to detect it, i am well aware of its purpose plus now i cannot update my windows, i'm stuck with no updates since i formated it now to use it. My pc is a pentium 4, 2.66Ghz, 1.5G ram, roughly 6 years old and has got a 4 month old hard drive. It has a new 500W power supply as well (basically everything in it is new ish, apart from the mother board). Using windows XP pro. Thanks everyone for your time.
The first thing I'd check is that the jumpers are set correctly on the drive, and that the cable is oriented properly. Make sure the HDD is set to MASTER and that it's connected to the end-most connector.
