Hi all, new to the forums here. Just want to know if anyone out there has gotten the new Nvidia 7800GS AGP card. I'm still chuggin along with an AGP system and I don't have enough cash to upgrade my mobo/cpu/RAM. I basically want to know if it's worth the upgrade from my current card (Radeon X800 Pro). I primarily use my system for gaming (Battlefield 2 specifically), and I want to play the game with higher graphics settings and fps.

My current card gives me about 50fps average at low detail settings. On a 64 player map with lots of people, however, I start chugging at about 30fps. I basically want a card that will net me a solid 60fps+ at medium graphics settings (if that's even possible). I would hope it is because I'm running a P4 2.8Ghz system and I really don't want to have to upgrade everything, just my video card. So if anyone has this new 7800GS in their system, let me know how it performs. Thanks!

i havent got one, but i have had a look at reviews on it, and to be honist, its not that impressive, its only got 16 pipelines, its practically a revamped 6800ultra, your better off getitng somthing like an x800gto2, then unlocking it so it has 16 pipelines, and then overclocking it so its an x850xt pe, as they do beat the 7800gs in some benchmarks.

its also not worth what its selling at ;\

You're running it on low? That doesnt' seem right for an X800Pro which is a pretty good card. Do you have 512Mb's or ram as that might be the bottleneck. From what I can tell the it's a very good card. It's got higher clock speeds than both the 7800GT and 6800Ultra. It confortably beats the 6800Ultra OC and that's saying quite a bit as that card is still in the max everything category more or less so for AGP I'd say it's your best option.

Well here's the thing. I bought the cheap man's X800 Pro, the Connect3D brand. It has 400Mhz RAMDAC as opposed to the DUAL RAMDAC the card normally has. Or maybe that doesn't affect anything. I don't know for sure. I do know that I have 4 sticks of cheap 256 RAM, but it's dual channel. I just ordered 2 gigs (2x 1gig sticks) of Corsair XMS RAM so hopefully that will improve my performance some.
You guys are right though. 300 bucks is way too much for an APG card. If anyone has any advice for me as to how I can improve my performance either by overclocking or cheap upgrades, please post. I'm gettin desperate here.

get an x800gto2, its can easilly be modded into an x850xt pe as it uses the same core as the x850xt pe (R480), and its a hell of a lot cheaper than a 7800gs, and i have seen x850xt pe beat 7800gs in certain benches.

the 7800gs does have more techonologies like sm 3.0

Seems that a 7800GS is around the performance of an X850XT, sometimes better, sometimes a bit worse. But with a bit of an overclock and the potential to unlock pipelines this could all go to the GS. However I will agree, while that X800GTO2 has a great price you would have to do the same things just to get it to 7800GS speeds. And granted there is a risk that you won't always get good a good overclock or be able to enable all the pipelines:(

7800gs is 16 pipes, can it really be unlocked to 20 or 24?

I'm not positive but I've been lead to belive there's potential. I wouldnt' count on it though, might be the same chipset as the 6800U, I can't quite remember. Either way it's an improvement over the 6800Ultra so that's pretty impressive in my book.
