I bought a 2nd hand ipod classic, and tried to fill it up with music. When syncing with iTunes, it crashed at a certain point. (The seller mentions this and I thought it was just an itunes problem and risked buying it, as I had no intentions of using iTunes.) I accessed the drive via Explorer and tried copying and pasting misc. files onto it but AFTER 1.2gb or so is used there is always a 'failed write delay' with the yellow triangle and access to the drive crashes explorer, and i have to shut down and disconnect to reaccess it. (I've got all the music backed up so i had no worries trying out transfers) The iPod device works fine to my knowledge. I've ran the inbuilt utility checks and ran into no problem with the tests. So i suspect it to be the drive. I've heard about USB ipod syn cables causing transfer problems but i doubt that because specifically the drive crashes explorer after 1.2gb and i have used seperate sessions when transferring the files to avoid this so called cable issue. I have done the following alreay in a attempt to rectify this strange problem: Windows Error-Checking, Defragmentation to no avail and no errors. Reformatted to NTFS, FAT32, exFAT in windows. chkdsk with CMD (with no errors reported or fixed) Checked if there was a sharing quota. Since it was originally exfat i thought that'd be the problem as it was newer than the ipod and it may not be compatible, so i formatted it to the others (and did so flawlessly) and the same problem arises. I used the 'Hard Disk Low Level Format' tool but it did come up with a whole load of errors as it attempted to format the drive. (i'll have to redo it to post the results.) However it did not identify what the hard drive was and the type nor its serial number. When i check the properties of the drive in windows all it says is: Apple USB Hard Disk Device Standard Hard disk No further information is given. When i tried using other disk utility progams they refuse to recognise it as the type of drive is a 'Removable Disk'! So is this a hard disk failure? Cuz if it is I might as well sell this as repairs instead of the cost of replacing the iPod's hard drive! As I mentioned everything works fine and dandy right until I reach 1.2gb I questioned the seller and they mention how they opened the ipod up before and tried to replace a battery/had an issue with it and then this problem occured for them. If this is of any use here is the SMART DATA from the ipod's OS utility program. Is there any results that is of concern? Retracts: 25 Reallocs: 1320 Pending sectors: 0 Poweron HOurs: 24 Start/Stops: 1015 Temp: Current 23c Temp: Min 10c Temp: Max 53c Could it therefore be a loose connection of the hard drive when the seller enclosed the ipod? (which means id open and reconnect) Should I invest in a few pounds for a new USB iPod sync cable to check? Many thanks in advance to those who kindly help.
