    hello all,

i have a problem with my new screen that's been bugging me for a while and although ive spent hours on it i am simply clueless as to its cause.

i bought myself a new LCD screen (Philips 220cw) which is a 22" screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10.
obviously i installed it's drivers and set the resolution to the recommended resolution of 1680*1050. this is really the only option because everything else looks awful. i was very happy with the display at that stage.

the problem began after the first reboot. the computer switched to a different resolution and displayed only part of the desktop - the taskbar was hidden somewhere under the bottom end of the screen...
the weird thing is that in the display properties window the resolution was still set on 1680*1050! so i switch it to something else, click apply and switch it back to 1680*1050 and everything looked great again.

but doing this tedious routine after each startup is of course out of the question so i started looking for solutions. ive updated my display drivers, made sure everything is up to date with my XP SP3, and went through everything in the display driver's control panel and windows' relevant properties but to no avail.

another strange thing that may have something to do with it is that i can see two monitors in the display properties window which are marked 1 and 2 and are both named the same - philips 220cw but the second one doesnt have the check mark next to "extend my desktop..." so i doubt if thats the problem.

    my specs are:
    Win xp sp3 fully updated
    intel D850MV board
    pentium 4 1600
    512 RAM
RADEON 7000 display adapter with CATALYST 1.2.2314.20337 installed (up to date according to ATI's site)

any ideas would be very welcomed!
    thanks all.

Do you have the monitor connected via a DVI or VGA cable?

Sounds silly but don't suppose you have used both cables have you?

what happens if you set a non-standard resolution (lower resolution) then restart the computer? does it keep the resolution settings?
