Hi folks I have two new questions for you!! I have another dell laptop, the owner just screwed the OS by turning it off several times just pressing the power button for more than 5 seconds. As expected, the system now wont come up. It is complaining about a corrupted file: windows\system32\config\system the file has no extension...just "system". I searched in the install CD and under the I386 directory there are 5 or 6 "system.XX_"...now the first question: How can I know which one to expand from the recovery console???? I checked in a working XP system and there is a "system" file without any extension..but again??...which one to expand?? After seeing that I ran chkdisk and nothing happened. I decided to repair XP but I have no option for Repair in the setup. Now the second question: Why sometimes there is a repair option in the XP setup program just after accepting the EULA(pressing f8) and sometimes you can just setup XP withour repairing(the repair option doesn't shows up)? Thanks a lot!!!
I found this... How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting I think it is pretty much what I'm looking for. I wonder if the corrupted registry info is the responsible for hiding the Repair option in the setup. It makes sense for me. Any comments welcome. Thanks
