Hey I've got an Asus motherboard ( the m3a78-em) and i also have an AMD athlon II x4 and I was wondering if they are compatible. Some websites say it has support for AM2, AM2+, and they also say it supports newer athlon II and phenom II cpus. Im confused because I believe the athlon II that I have is an AM3. Any help would be nice thanks. Oh and by the way if it matters the official CPU I have is the AMD Athlon II x4 635.

    Hi,

I checked on newegg and it says the processor you have is an am3 socket type and the system board suppports AM2 and AM2+ processors. I then found on AMD's website this "Although Socket AM3 processors can be used on Socket AM2+ motherboards, the opposite is not possible." So according to AMD, you should be able to use your AM3 processor in this AM2+ motherboard socket.
