Hello,

I have sold my old AMD 1800+ cpu on ebay, when I removed it from my shuttle with anti static band it was working fine.

I have just got this email:
The chip was inserted into an Asrock K7VT4-4X when recieved, bios reset,
fan runs but won't get to post.

chip inserted into Asus A7N8X-E with vocal post, fan runs, chip reported
not installed

Asrock K7VT4-4X tested with AMD 2500 barton, working

Asus A7N8X-E tested with AMD 2500 barton, working

chip tested with friends system with Asus A7N8X board, fan runs but won't
get to post.

his chip back in, working

inserted into an Asrock K7VT4-4X , fan runs but won't get to post, left
running for 5 mins, turned off.

Asrock K7VT4-4X tested with AMD 2500 barton, not working now.

AMD 2500 barton tested with Asus A7N8X-E, working.

I wore an anti static strip, use artic silver compound and why on earth
should I try to overclock it before I've tried it?

my conclusion is that this chip has been run with defective cooling,
leading to internal thermal shock.

I now have a dud mboard as well!

Anyone have any ideas why this has happened and if the chip could suddenly stop working and break a MOBO ?

I know your guys on this forum know alot of stuff so I am hoping you can help me resolve this little issue.

Should I beileve him, should I ask him more question???

Thanks ppl

Well, what you should do is have him send it back for testing. You test it and if it's good tell him it works fine, and that he might want to double check his power supply. If it doesn't, it somehow got borked during shipping. I don't know how competent the other guy is, but if he didn't install the CPU cooler correctly, he might've nuked it and it took the board with him.

Personally before you suggest he sends it back for testing i would say to him, that he should claim on the the delivery cover default royal mail has i think £50 worth of cover at no extra charge.

Tell him that you had tested it before sending it in several different machines, and that to have installed the CPU he should have been wearing anti-static gear.

If he said he did, ask him what anti-stat gear he was wearing / using as he's probably telling a porky!

When ever i used to sell things over ebay i would always include in the postage cost the price of insurance cover for the amount that is paid for it, that way they can claim on the delivery or couriers.

Notify him also that he should have handled the processor with great care, and not touched the processor without anti-stat gear.

When i build computers i do not use anti-stat gear cos i think personally its sh!t, What you have to do, is to ground yourself properly, to do this i merely turn one of my other computers off, take the side of the case off and just rest my foot on a metal part of the case, this will succesfully ground u, as you will still have your power lead from the socket in the wall connected, although power is not on, therefore their is definate grounding that you know works.

Oh, and if he won't send it back to you, DO NOT give him a refund. It may sound harsh, but you do not know if he destroyed the motherboard and CPU himself or not. If he has an issue with that, tell him that you understand, but that he needs to understand your position. If he decides to complain to eBay about it, you can always e-mail them and explain the situation.
