im just wondering, if i could install a game on a mobile hard drive, would I be able to play it on another computer without installing any of it on the other computer, like can I open it directly from the mobile HD? I appreciate the help thx
Never tried it myself. I think some games might work yes. Maybe not all because of registry keys needed which aren't present on the drive.
Yup exactly that. Older games, I'd imagine would work, but the newer ones, no chance, unless you copied appropriate registry files across and put em into the other PC, but dont really wanna mess with that.
I wasn't totally sure about games, but software like office apps and the like, especially ms office and large complex packages will need to access registry to run.
thx. im jus tryin to think of ways to be able to carry around games and programs without having to install them or add registry keys, but i guess that won't get too far. haha
Waffle's right, the registry would be a problem. You could do this with Linux for sure, but I don't think you could do it with OS-X, because they also have something similar to the Windows registry (albeit better).
if it's a completely install free file, yes. I've had a few games (warcraftII, warcraft III, QuakeIIIarena) that I ran completely off of a CD, without install. They were cracked and fooled around with a lot. Slower, illegal, and time consuming. Though....if you did install the game on the hard drive from each computer so they both have correct registry values it might work.
If you use your external hd as your main hd and have windows and stuff instaleld there, then the files need to play will work and you can transport it from one computer to another. i did that for work. but like they said, otherwise most new games put files all over the place.
