Hello everyone, I am getting desperately frustrated with my ACER laptop. Had it for a couple of years now. It runs on Windows XP. Mechanically it is fine. And when it wants to, it runs quite fast, normally when it isn't connected to the Internet. When it is connected, it can suddenly for no apparent reason go very slowly. It's maddening. I've tried SO many things to fix it, and being an amateur it's very frustrating. The virus/spyware software I've got installed are Norton Internet Security (2006 I think), Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Doctor. Also Windows Defender. Have also installed Registry Mechanic, in case a registry full of errors was what was slowing it down. It's working fine right now. But sometimes it takes me literally 5 minutes to get to the stage where I can log in to my BT yahoo email address, or bring up Google, etc. I check Windows Task Manager, and it seems to run slow when LUCallBackProxy is running...is that Norton? I've tried to stop Norton from running Live Update automatically without prompting me first, in case that was the problem, but NOTHING seems to work. Is there anything I more I could tell you that would help diagnose and possibly find the cause/fix the problem? It would be so helpful to have your expert advice! I'm so frustrated!! First thing is too DUMP Norton, It is the worst Antivirus for hogging up all your resources. stick in something lite, Like AVG or AntiVir... Next get ccleaner...Just by removing Norton you will notice a big difference.
I totally agree here - kill Norton and take AVG Free! Uninstall WIndows Defender as well - it's no good, use ad-aware.

When you say it goes very slow do you mean the net or the laptop in general? Im guessing the internet. I personally used to use the free zonealarm firewall. It never seemed to slow things down for me. (zonealarm, avg, spybot and adaware was my fav combo) LUCallBackProxy is part of the norton package so should go when you uninstall norton. If things are still slow try using a different browser as a quick fix. You will get to see if its the net/computer or the browser causing trouble. I used to get slow downs to the point where the mouse cursor would barely move and it turned out to be the fireftp addon to firefox. Are you using the bt browser? Your best off with firefox, though try internet explorer cos its already installed on your laptop. :agree: yeah get rid of Norton, i think AVG was ok but when i used Windowz, i used Avast and use Ad-Aware & Spybot S & D, failing that you may need to clean reinstall XP Edit: try using Firefox 2 before you do anything Edit: i think Avast is FREE
Yes, Avast is free, but I choose AVG over it anyways; but I think they're approx. the same in all catergories so try them both and choose
I agree about Norton...It's the most heaviest AV out there. I personally don't like different programs to take care of the viruses, spywares and adwares. All those programs may create conflicts between each other. I use Trend Micro PC-Cillin since it is very light and it has AV and spyware protection in the same product. I recently read about the lates version of Spy-sweeper. It includes AV protection and PCmag rated it very well. Even though, to get rid of norton the best way it to download the removal tool from the Symantec website. If you simply do an Add/Remove from the control panel, a lot of crap will remain in your system and perhaps your problem will be still there. GL
Yeah that's right, you need to use the removal tool, as allendehl says [ot]PC Magazine looks like a crap magazine to me, though; I wouldn't trust its ratings lol ... I got some issues for free as part of some promotion, and it just gave me the suspicious feeling that they are slaves to the companies they "evaluate" (aka take money from in exchange for publicity).
