ATI or NVidia

Hi,
I am assembling my computer for the first time. The computer is intended for gaming and other purposes. My budget for a graphics card is close to $250. Till now I was thinking of buying a 8800GTS (320MB) card. Later intend to buy another card for SLI. I would like to know if this is the best bet or is there an ATI card which is better than 8800 GTS for almost the same price.

I am asking this coz in one the threads it was written that ATI has a card that matches 8800GTX but is in testing stages. I am not a die hard ATI or NVidia fan, just that I want the best card for my budget. As such please advise.

If your thinking about running dual graphics cards i would go with nvidia, ATI's crossfire doesnt seem to have a great reputation (not that i really know alot about it tho).
 
i suggest you to use ATI,because X1000 series not only support HDR+FAA,
but also it will do better than Geforse7XXX in NFS Carbon,about 50% faster:D
 
ok, if AMD gets there stuff straight they should have a card out next month, that said, they should have all of ATI's driver issues straightened out, or for the most part. So i would truly wait until then to see which card is actually better, just save your money in the mean time. As well, your VGA card also determines which mainboard your going to get as well, so thats a factor that should be considered. Also, don't buy any card unless it supports DX10, theres no point in buy a pre DX10 card because they don't work completely with DX10 games, and since all games are going to use DX10 from now on its just a good idea to buy a card that supports it.

Definitely don't take this as a reason not to get a DX10 card but with Vista's poor market penetration i can't see DX10 only games appearing anytime soon!

Although DX10 has apparently been hacked up to work on windows 2000/XP (Which M$ had said couldn't be done, standard bull:swear: to force consumers to 'upgrade').

lol, yeah no, i know what your saying, but games in the future will be made for DX10, and DX10 only, that and even now if your card doesn't support DX10 you won't get all the sweet little things in the games and all that jazz. Yes, games will still be made pre DX10 for the next year or so, but getting a DX10 card is a very good investment.
 
Do you know a DX10 game called Crysis(not issued yet),it seems that even a8800GTS is not enough to run this game. that means you must combile a 8800GTS SLI for this game.also a physics card is need if you want to see more real effect.i think it's the same as DX9 age,if you want to play a DX9C game ,Gefores 6XXX is not enough.you should get a Gefores 7XXX.

Personally, I've had good luck with Nvidia cards because I believe they have solid drivers. Right now if you're willing to spend 250, go with the dx10 8800gts because it's been out for a while now and the kinks should be ironed out.
 
Actually i forgot to mention that. Currently Nvidia is having some issues with some of the drivers they are using for the 8 series cards. They are suppose to have some bugs and things of that nature. So in all honesty, i would wait, save your money, and see what AMD (ATI) brings to the table. That way you will have no regrets about anything.
