    hey all,

    Things are finally starting to get moving at my work for the server i mentioned many months ago :D

    I'm trying to organize a off-site backup (over the internet, 4MBit ADSL lines at both ends) to a server running netware 6.5 from the Debian Etch box at my work [doesnt store anything important yet]... and i know nothing of netware so any suggestions would help alot!

    I was thinking something along the lines of rsync (so only the changes are transfered every day) but i am truly clueless :p

    I love this 'job', i get to play with computers :D

    I plan to avoid losing any data by doing the following;
    • A Level 1 Raid (done with hardware, not software) so not data is lost if a drive dies [and the computer should keep on running normally]
    • A Full backup is taken to tape at the end of every day (for as long as i can fit a full backup on a single tape)
    • During out of office hours (when there is no-one to use any of the available bandwidth) the remote backup will be done.

    The tape backups will be kept on site (as they may be needed) and even if we lose the server & tapes to a fire, there is still a backup ~100 miles away (and whats even better, the server which I'm sending my backups to is backed up daily!!!).

    I'm planning to protect the data by:
    • Using Full disk encryption with the encryption key stored on a usb pen drive, possibly one of the one's with the fingerprint scanner so that no one can just copy the pen drive... i will have one, a manager will have one and a third [without the fingerprint verification] will be stored somewhere safe [no hints :p]
    • encrypting the tape backups (whats the point in an encrypted hdd if someone could just nick the daily backup?)
    • The off-site backup will also be encrypted before it is sent

    Overkill or a good plan? The Data protection ack (uk) states that my employer has to take reasonable steps to protect any data that they store about anyone... to me this means i have to encrypt everything, because physical security for this server is simply just not possible in this building.

    Encrypting the backups does seem like a very risky idea though...
