Hi everyone. I tried to install Mandriva One on my old computer, but it was just to laggy. Here are the specs:

    P3 700
    128MB RAM
    Radeon 9200

What version of linux will run best on this machine? I would like something fairly new that wont lag. Thanks in advance

Your processor is powerful enough to run even the most up-to-date Linux distribution. It's the amount of RAM installed in your computer thats letting you down. These days, i'd consider 256MB to be the bare minimum.

I think Xubuntu would be your best bet.

The reason Mandriva One was slow is because it is a live distro. It has to use the system RAM as virtual disk space, as well as for normal RAM. With 128mb RAM there was no other way it was going to be. You'll see an improvement once you install a distro, there'll be more RAM for system.

You may actually have some luck with running distro with KDE/GNOME (mandriva, ubuntu, kubuntu) on that, it won't be fast but worth a try.

Well, if it really bothers you, you can try DSL (damn small linux). It relatively small. I know Knoppix and Symphony OS won't work on LiveCD, as bothe take 430-445 mb of ram. Hmm....you COULD try DSL, but i dunno about installing to HD.

    Maybe try WinME?

    Muahahahahahahah

Seriously though you have a number of lightwieght distros.
So Far I have tried, Xubuntu and DSL (and I am sure there was another one which I cannot remember) on a P600, 128MB RAM and 64MB GCard. Xubuntu was not that happy but DSL (and the mysterious third one...) flew like the dickens.... and played a CD right out of the :swear: box!!!!

If Mandriva is your thang, when installing, just install a lighter desktop manager and see if that helps...

    Good luck.....

I have a laptop which barely has any RAM at all; it runs Mandriva 2006 with the WM (WindowMaker) desktop and the Opera web browser. Runs well enough for my purposes. In fact, it's currently hooked up to my stereo and acting as a jukebox.
