What does it mean to flash the bios? on a motherboard... Do you have to download it, from a website?
The reason I ask...I was over reading a review and this person wrote. Moved from an Athlon XP 2200+ to the 3400+ with the Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard. You will have to flash the A8V in order for it to pick up the CPU correctly, but it's well worth the trouble. I ran a decode test on the machine before and after and the A64 3400+ can decode a movie in about 18 mins that takes the XP 2200+ over 40 using the exact same software and hardware except CPU, motherboard, and RAM(speed not amount). Very strong ... I am considering this motherboard...is this something I can do...myself?

It's programming the BIOS chip with a newer firmware for the motherboard. You'll have to download it from Asus website, and also check that you get the latest BIOS flashing software. You can do it through Windows or through the DOS prompt. Asus flash too seems to work fine when I've used it, but there are people that decry it, as you're SOL if Windows locks up during the flash. Of course, if you've got Linux or some other non-Windows OS, you'll have to use the DOS prompt version to flash the BIOS.

If everything is working fine, I wouldn't mess with a BIOS flash.
