Biostar NF4ST-A9 Memory Options

I have a Biostar NF4ST-A9 mobo and was wanting to put some more memory in it. I have 1gb (2x512) at present and was going to add another 512mb. Looking in the manual, the diagram shows configurations of 1,2 and 4 sticks of memory. Can anyone tell me whether i can put 3 sticks in? I obviously don't want to buy memory for it to not work. I suppose i could buy 2 256's but it seems a waste.

Here is a snippet from the Manual for your motherboard(its important you should read it). Pay extra attention to the part ive outlined in red. Your mobo supports a single ram chip, two or four. Three wont work. Make sure they are the same type of ram so you dont have compatability issues. Depending on the processor you install it is best to have your system running in "dual channel mode."

Dual channel is used when your processor has a 800mhz bus but your ram is only ddr400. Two ram chips are used as a pair to make up the 800mhz.

Supports 8 banks in total.
Supports DDR333 and DDR400.

Thats what i thought from looking at the diagram but i wondered if anyone new if 3 would work. Do i need to do anything special for dual channel memory other than put them in the correct slots? Is it a special type of memory? I have Corsair standard 2x512 DDR400 at the moment.

To clarify on the above, i read the manual but wondered if that was a best case scenario and 3 would still work. Thats cleared it up though. I'll have to get two more chips. Can anyone answer my query about dual channel?

PS in the above new should in fact be knew.
 
You'll need to have the same amount in each channel, and I believe, due to the Athlon 64's integrated memory controller, you can't do dual channel with 3 sticks like you could with the Athlon XP's on the nForce 1/2 platform.
