Broken Hard Drive?

Hello, recently my power supply went all screwy and burned up. I think it burned up my motherboard as well but thats besides the point. I fixed the motherboard and everything except now my computer will not detect my hard drive. I have tried multiple ways of plugging it into my motherboard and different jumper settings, all of them have failed. Upon closer inspection there is two small burn marks (thats what it looks like anyway) on one of the black chips on the hard drive. The question is is what is the best way to go about fixing this. I really dont want to buy a new one and the warranty doesnt cover power fluctuations. I have already sent the whole computer in once and I'am tired of dealing with all these problems. Please any suggestions that cost little or no money would be appreciated. The drive is a maxtor 200gb 7200rpm.

The burned marks indicate that the PCB (Primary Controller Board) is burned, I am not aware of anyways to fix it! sorry

If there are important files on the HD then you can you try and find a HD recovery company! They know to fix such problems but can cost loads!
 
If a chip is burned, it means there was a big fluctuation. BIG. So other parts of the hard drive, not maybe, WILL be damaged and without the proper tools you cant diagnose or replace the parts. If you have no data that you MUST have, gotta buy a new hard drive.
 
ok thanks guys. I didnt think the flux was that big, or maybe it was because the powersupply shot sparks and was smoking :eek: oh well. I can always get my old 30 gb hard drive from my sister's computer.
 
Sparking and smoke from your electronics is a bad thing. Actually, if you smell burning electronics, it's a bad thing. It also sounds like you had a cheap-o brand PSU, judging by the fact that cheaper units tend to take other parts with it when they bite the dust.

I think you had your first geek initiation tho. :chk:
 
aye, luckily it only fried my hard drive and mother board. The motherboard was replaced for free but I dont think i can get my hard drive replaced. I am now using an old 30gb hard dive but now i need a windows full cd :( I guess i can always put linux on it though.
 
it was a hercules 400w and it fried they replaced it with the same brand :mad: oh well it seems to be working fine. I tried looking for websites for that ps but couldnt find any. Now im trying to install redhat (really old version). All i want to do is play hl2 and doom3 and crap hopefully wine will run those smooth if not I will get xp. windows sucks. They still cost around 100$ for a full version. I should make another OS with my non-existent programming skills.
