Hey all, around 3 years ago I ran into computer troubles and turned my attention towards console gaming (PS3 to be specific) and having had a laptop in my possession used it for any internet browsing/music/movies/word processing/etc. I used to be fairly up to date with computer hardware, but as I'm sure everyone knows here things move fast and 3 years is a fairly long time. I'm pretty knowledgeable overall when it comes to computers and have no problems with building them, installing operating systems and maintenance - I'm just out of the loop with hardware.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is a commonly asked question but does anybody know where to start on finding out what my options are for building a gaming PC on budget - I want to build it part by part, as I know this is cheaper and already have a copy of Windows 7 64bit, plus this will give me a new hobby - something desperately needed. I live in the United Kingdom and I'll say to try and make things easier my budget line is probably £250-300, cheaper is entirely welcome. I'd like hardware that will last me a decent amount of time, can run current games well and will handle up coming games with a decent frame rate but also with adaptable hardware so that I can add a few changes here and there as the months/years go by.

Is there any websites to help me out, previous threads here or is a member here able to assist me with finding the right parts? There are just so many and in some cases older parts end up being better than new ones, etc.

I've heard AMD is the best option for video cards when it comes to budget PCs, is this still the case? What other brands are best for this situation also?

    I already have:
    *Monitor
    *Mouse
    *Keyboard
*Possibly a tower, but I'd like this included anyway to be safe

I don't want a hard drive bigger than 500gb really, as I am on a budget, but I'd like it so if in the future I can add more. I'm aware there are different types of hard drives now? My previous ones were IDE (out-dated?) so I don't wish to use them as I want to be able to keep up with any new hardware that comes out in the future for the odd upgrade. I'd like memory suitable for a 64bit operating system, my last machine had 2gb of RAM so I'd like to step it up a bit if possible.

Thanks in advance and I understand there is a search function, but I'd like as much up to date information as possible to get the best out of this. But any contributed links are appreciated.

I also have no problem using Ebay to buy hardware.
