Ok guys for ten points who can tell me what happens when you overload a power supply.
Im curious for safety reasons. Can it damage other componants(if yes how likely is it)

I think that the system won't boot up.

If there isn't enough juice, the system won't wory, is my guess.

But I wouldn't try it anyway, lol.

If theres not enough juice it usually starts but nothing comes on the screen.

Or at worst your pc will turn on, and then once it is required to provide higher wattage to the system when playing games / intensive applications, your psu wont cope, and will blow..

And if its not a good powersupply.. a good one.. it will probably take a few components with it.. usually hard drive and motherboard.

So I guess theres no way of knowing if your about to overload the PSU then?
I tried calculating the wattage of my comp but realised that wattage is Voltage, Ampage and current together.
This has turned out to be the most frustrating thing ive tried to do yet.
The power supply in question is a "Silent-X 250 Watt mini PSU which came with my new Shuttle system. I found out that these power supplies are not like others, their more powerfull than they sound. The funny thing is that not even shuttle could tell me what this baby could power :( .
I read a number of reviews on my system and Im pretty sure it will power a Radeon 9700pro (along with a standard arrangment of other stuff Ram, DvDrom etc). This is nice but I would like to know just how far it can go.
If anyone anywhere can help it would be most appreciated.
    The shuttle model is-
    SB75G2.
If anyone has one of these Id be interested to know their setup.
    Cheers :simpson:

The Shuttle PSU's are built a little differently, so the wattage isn't accurate. Actually, you really shouldn't be judging a PSU by watts. The number of amps on a rail is a much better indicator. I mean, there are these so-called 500W units out their that have 15A on their 12V line. My 350W Sparkle unit has that.

Basically, if the PSU isn't up to stuff, it just won't turn on. You may very well see some fans spin, but that's about it. If it's borderline, you might get some boot ups, but you'll likely start seeing instability when things are stressed.

You could always, uh, run a google search on the SB75G2, too.

From what I've seen, test setups in reviews have been running Radeon 9800Pro's and XT's along with 3GHz+ Prescott-based P4's...

it also depends on how much juice the fans are sucking. I know the 80mm Vantec Stealth's only drawr .1amp each fan.

I'll go find out the Amps for it.
    BIG Thanks everyone. :good:
