Can't copy contents from old drive?

Hey,

I am inserting a new HD and I have my main hooked up on as the primary drive and I have my old one hooked up on another IDE using my cd-rom drive. Windows recognizes the drive as Drive D. However when I try to copy a folder or 2 it tells me that windows cannot recognize it. I also tried to use Acronis and I got the error "0x40001." Does anybody have any idea on why I can't copy contents from my old drive to my new one?
 
I just want to confirm the way you have set up your hard drives.
You should connect your main hard drive (the one installed with Windows) onto your first IDE channel. Connect it to the end of the IDE cable and set the jumpers on the hard drive to master. Connect your second hard drive onto the middle connector using that same cable and set the jumpers to slave. You will then need to connect your CD-ROM to your second IDE channel. Connect it to the end of the cable and set it's jumpers to Master or Cable Select.

So you should have one cable with both hard drives and the other cable with the CD-ROM.

After you have done that, you will need to format your new hard drive (if you haven't done that already). Go to 'My computer' and right click on your new hard drive (it will probably be called D:\ but might be called E:\ if your CD-ROM is using D:\) and select FORMAT. Then all you need to do is choose the files system (NTFS or FAT) and press go.
 
Thats the first thing I tried. Windows did not recognize it however it did detect it. I took the ribbon and power cable out of the cd-rom and put it in my second hard drive. They are both setup as master with my newer one being primary. I can transfer data from the newer drive I have now to the older drive without any problem whatsoever. However I can only copy like 1 kb or a couple and then it will give me an error saying it can't complete the transfer. What I am going to go and do now is make the old drive the primary drive in BIOS and try to load that and upload files from that drive to the newer drive.
 
Like I said, you need to make one hard drive MASTER (Primary means the same thing as Master) and the other drive SLAVE.

Both hard drives cannot be set to Master at the same time. They will fight each other for control over the IDE bus and neither will work properly.

You cannot set Master and Slave configurations in the BIOS. Instead, you need to set the jumpers on the hard drives

I did try that first. Also, yes you can have them both set to master because you have secondary and master hard drive. It works to a certain extent. I was able to copy some files over by having the other drive set as master. Do realize they are both using different IDE cables. I said before....that I did try and make the older drive set as slave but windows didn't show the drive in windows even though BIOS said it recognized it.

I was able to copy some files before my hard drive crashed on me using the old hard drive as the main drive, copying files from that to the other drive
 
Heres my standard solution for HD troubles :P: Get/borrow a 5.25" Drive Caddy, basiaclly a box which turns any HD , DVD drive etc into a external drive which plugs into a usb or firewire port.
 
I just want to make sure we are speaking the same language here, as you seem a little confused as to whats what.

You have two IDE channels, a PRIMARY channel and a SECONDARY IDE channel. Each of these IDE channels can have a MASTER and a SLAVE device, normally a MASTER hard drive and a SLAVE CD-ROM drive.

So, you need to connect BOTH hard drives to THE SAME IDE cable Then using the jumpers on the hard drives, select MASTER for your main hard drive and SLAVE for your second hard drive.
