Compaq Proliant 800

Nope, not to a Xeon. They use a Slot 2 interface, where as the PII/III/Celeron Slot type CPU's are Slot 1. Slot 1 has 242 pins vs 330 for Slot 2. From the looks of things, you might be able to put up to 2 500MHz PIII's in there, but I'm not 100% positive.

I was under the imperssion that one can't put a P3 processor in a P2 System. But I hope you are right because I have a spare P3 Slot1 500Mhz processor.

Nope can't install a P3 500 Mhz processor. Gave the Error:

"215-Nonfunctioning Voltage Regulator Module for Processor 2"

I think I am stuck with a PII 400 Mhz

:( sorry to hear that, although if u've got abit of extra cash lying about you could always buy a Compaq Proliant ML350:
Dual 3.6Ghz Xeons
4GB memory
5x 40GB 15,000RPM SCSI

:P

You may need to get a VRM for that board apparently. Also, you're highly unlikely to be able to run two asynchronous speeds of CPU's. That server's setup for dual CPU's, and what I'm guessing you're trying to do is drop in the second CPU in the spare slot. I'd try swapping it with the current 400 and see.

You also might browse the forums over @ 2CPU and see if you can come up with anything on that. I'm not able to figure out anything looking at HP's website about it (they bought out Compaq a a few years back).

Well, I got the proliant for free,... and the p3 processor was lying around in the computer junk, which i have a habbit of collecting,...
it currently has a 350MHz P2 processor in it. So, its good even if i could replace it with a p3 500...

Also, does anybody know what kind of RAM this system support. The 64MB chip already installed in it is kind of long (interms of vertical lenght). I tried to place a PC-133 RAM, but it was smaller in size compared to the slot and would not fix in.

Ok, I can't seem to find the model number of the particular server, but seeing from the processor (PII 350) and RAM (64MB), it seems to be a COMPAQ
"ProLiant 800 PII 350 Config BWS1 - (PII350)".
After going through the HP Website, I found the this particular server and all the upgrade info. Here is the link:

http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/S...DH2594H60&Smethod=0&SearchCriteria=313600-001

Now what I understand from the link is that it supports SD DIMM RAM up to 256MB per slot ( in other words no 512MB support).
Secondly, Big B was right, the max. support for this system is a PIII 500MHz. Now the problem is that I have spare PIII 500MHz here. I tried to install it, but the system would only start for 15 to 20 seconds (only power with nothing on the screen) and then automatically shutdown.
I pulled this PIII processor from a working HP Pavillion 8562 a long time ago. Could it be that the processor is courrpted now, it was lying around under a heap of other stuff (or junk). Is there a way to check it???

It could be that the CPU is overheating. You also might wanna check your Event Logs and see what you come up with. Even if you're not getting BSOD's, there may very well be some valuable info there to help pinpoint the problem.
