Hi there, I recently built a new pc (mid January) and up until now it has been working fine. But last night when I switched off, the lights went off (led's on the side suggesting the power was cut, it doesn't do that when normally rebooting), and the fans, and then half a second later, it powered back on and continued to load up windows again! It also does the same when hibernating I have found out. Eventually I had to reluctantly pull the power supply out. My spec is: AMD64 3000+, 512mb PC3200 RAM, DVD-RW, CD-RW, and a belkin wireless router connected through a LAN port. The following things are connected to the PSU: CDRW, DVDRW, Firewire and USB2 card, Monitor, and the floppy drive. Thanks a lot, Thomas.
It sounds like a bad/insufficient PSU to me, but it could even be WinXP crashing. They disabled the ol' BSOD in XP, so when it crashes hard it reboots leaving you wondering, "Is it my software, or my hardware?" Bad RAM or a blown capacitor are also possible culprits. With that in mind, try these things in the following order: Make sure your power cable is plugged in firmly Try a new power cable Inspect the motherboard for bad caps Test the RAM overnight with Memtest86+ Try booting to a live Linux distro such as Kubuntu or PCLinuxOS, see if it still occurs then Replace the PSU
Thanks For your help! It turned out that my brothers new joystick (usb) had caused the problem.. I figured it out when I tried a Linux Distro and the power down worked and the joystick didn't, and when he got the joystick was installed was when the problems started. Thanks for your help, Thomas
