    HI!

I have this pc with a 3com NIC. It got a fresh reinstall recently. But when I try to download updates, when it comes to the last few data chunks, the PC reboots. Always at the same point. Faulty NIC? The RAM, VGA, CPU and HDD are OK - checked them several times.

    thanks

nothing alerting there. also, the NIC is perfectly OK, since I put it into another PC and it worked 100%, also tried different drivers. The RAM and CPU all are OK as well (ran memtest and FAH). Could it be the motherboard (I even flashed the BIOS and it didn't help)?

there is always a ~25% packet loss which makes windows update not work.

    Try reinstalling windows..

[ot]Did you try to install two things at a time...I mean Like IE7 and Antivirus both at a time coz these things creates conflicts too, you have to restart your computer everytime you install everything to install something new...[/ot]

the pc's bound to have Windows 2000 Pro. And reinstalling won't fix the problem.

Ouch! Reinstall Windows over packet loss? Oh man..! Sorry, but that's just crazy!

Packet loss is not necessarily the result of a computer configuration, but rather the network it resides on.

edijs, can you open a command prompt and type:

    Code:
    ping www.google.co.uk

the network is perfectly fine, because other computers have no such problems. I was pinging everything - google, the DNS servers, hell, even the gateway... and all tell the same sad story: Request timed out. for about 1/4 of all packets.

Have you tried swapping the network cables around?

I think he means trying the cable that's working fine on the problematic machine, and trying the cable of the problematic machine on a known good machine.

    ah,ok.

the cable's not the problem. works fine. it's clearly something in the PC. i'm starting to get more and more convinced that it's the mobo that's causing the problems.

Can you try a different NIC? How about connecting the cable to a different port on your switch/router?

So far, I don't see anything that's convincing me that you have a faulty motherboard. Even if the on-board NIC is bad, it's much easier to obtain a new Network adapter card than yank out an entire motherboard.

Hi friend ,i think your getting blue screen with white letters , and then auto re-starting of the Ur PC. If this is the case plz kindly look over the shadow memory in the CMOS, and make it disable .This type of error occurs when there is any new hardware are software is installed. And also make sure disable the cache memory for a while, then check the same. And also Look over the Scheduled Tasks in the windows which is in the system Tools. Remove all unwanted thing in it. And also alway look over the event handle to know u better idea.

    Regards
    Tulasi
