DB9 extension cable

Greetings,

I am not the most proficient person as far as computers are concerned so please forgive my ignorance if this question is lame. I also hope this is the proper area to post this type of question and if not, please point me in the right direction.

I am in the middle of building a set of displays that are controlled by my computer through a DB9 cable. One of the displays needs to be placed up to 150' away from the computer and to purchase a cord that long is quite pricey. What I am wondering is if there is a way to build a cord out of some other form of cabling, (i.e., cat 5 or ?), that will work without causing alot of headache or problems. The displays use a dedicated power source and are comprised of several led's. Basically I just need to be able to get the signal from the computer to the displays the cheapest way possible through a DB9 connection.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give.

Yeah, you can do it. Just buy some bulk Cat3 or Cat5, whichever you can get cheaper. I usually buy from PI Manufacturing Corp. Then, crimp on a couple of RJ-45's and throw on a DB-9 converter. Done! You can get all of that on PI, or probably at a local Frys.
