Defrag

I have been expirenceing performance problems on my laptop lately, and i was advised (on this forum, actually) to perform a disk defragmentation. however, whenever i try to perform a disk defrag when the counter reaches 10% it refuses to go any higher, and shortly after the computer froze and i was forced to turn it off. i would like to finish the defrag, since i have already tried purging my system of spyware, viruses, and i have fixed as much of my registry that i can without having to pay money ;) and i cant think of anything else that would make my computer run really slow

in case it matters, here are my specs

hp omnibook 4150
GenuineIntel x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 (i believe its SUPPOSE to run at 600mhz, but a utility i ran reported it to be just a bit shy of 500mhz)
384.0mb RAM
ATI Rage Mobility (but i use the XPERT 98 AGP 2x Drivers)
Maestro Sound card

i realize its not agreat computer, but i think its running too slow even for such an old laptop, and so any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

edit ===================================================

also i noticed that when i go check on 'system' in the control panel it report that my system resources are only 50 - 70% free, is this normal or is this contributing to my slow performance? thanks

The windows defragmentation utility is very poor. I recommend you download and run [google]Diskeeper Lite[/google]. Its much more efficient.

Sorry, 50% to 70% free is ok. As long as it doesn't fall critically low when idle like 10% or so then its fine.

The defragger in Windows 98/95/ME is rather crappy, but it's fine in 2000/XP. If it's running Windows 9x, you may be due for a reinstall of the OS, especially if it's been over a year since that was done.

thanks, i installed the diskeeper lite and it came up with 90000+ excess fragments... no wonder my comp was running so slow. anyways now all i have to do is keeping running the defragmenting thing until it fixes all of the excess fragments (it refuses to fix them all at the same time :x: )

once again, thanks for all you guyz help
