Ok, Im running a ventrillo server (Voice com for gamers) on a machine behind a gateway with inbuilt DHCP.

The gateway forwards port **** to this computer using its ip address, The problems is depending on what order and what computers are on affects the IP address that the machine is given. and when the IP changes the server stops working untill i give the gateway the new ip to send the ports to!

Has anyone got any solutions that doesnt involve dmz?

This is a windows machine (tempory!!!)

    recap:
    1. running server on machine behind a gateway
    2. forwording ports from the gateway to the machine
    3. IP of the machine keeps on changing.
    4. this stops the server from working

You either need to assign the server a static IP address in the same subnet as your local network, or you need to set up a fixed lease with your DHCP server so that the mac address of your server's NIC is always given the same IP.

    Yup, static IP works :)

Unfortunatly, My DHCP server (part of my gateway) doesnt have many options! (On, Off, Forward requests and starting IP)

One question, The machien is now using the first available IP (the starting IP) so, if this machien is off when another is turned off... which requests an IP from the DHCP then will this machien get the starting IP? (and then stop my machien form connecting!)

Will this happen? should i change the static IP to the LAST possible IP on my network? or would that be a wast of my time.

Sadly, most cheap routers don't offer much in the way of advanced DHCP services. Maybe you could use an IPCop box?

In any case, it would definately be bad for your dynamic-leased IPs to encroach on your static IP(s). Is it possible to at least set the dynamic range in your router?

nope, i tried to change the starting addy..... but it told me i couldnt do that! (cos it would have meant that my computer was using an ip that wasnt allowed!)

Im only looking after 5 computers so if i set the IP of my machine to the 10th possible IP then i should be fine! (will i be fine?)

    here's my DHCP options!

Move your PC's IP to one outside of the static range, then apply the changes.
