Hello, I have 2X1GB (800MHz) in my system i want to add a further 4GB but these are 2X2GB (800MHz) giving me a total of 6GB will this combination be compatible ? BTW the memory is DDR2 and i have vista 64 bit
What motherboard do you have? The latest motherboards can do up to 8GB, but older ones may be limited to 4 or even 2 in some cases.
Hi, I have the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) That can certainly handle it. But i wont to know if different size memory sticks will be compatible.
Off-hand I don't see why not. It'd be beneficial if you purchased 2 x 2GB sticks of the same series that you currently have (i.e. Corsair XMS, Crucial Ballistix) to try and keep the same memory chips and timings across all the sticks.
Hi I was thinking of doing that by keeping all of the memory the same so im going to sell my old memory and purchase 4X2GB OCZ vista gold series 800MHz so that should give 8GB yummy But it will cost me £200 do you think thats worth it?
I know Vista is a bit of a RAM hog, so it's probably not a bad idea. Worth it, I don't know, but having 4GB isn't out of the question of being beneficial at the very least. 8GB, I'm not sure of as I haven't run Vista yet. Stuff like heavy photo/video editing and high-end gaming will definite benefit from it.
I`d buy 2 x 2GB, then maybe add the 2nd 2 x 2GB in a year or so, see how things go as far as games and other applications go... plus, dont run 1 or 3 sticks at the same time, because its slower.
Not true. Running odd numbers of sticks won't allow for dual-channel memory, which affects the processor somewhat. However, dual-channel vs. single channel is roughly 10% or less of a difference, in favor of dual-channel. If an application loves memory, speed is going to do very little to nothing to appease this hunger.
Hello Thanks for all the help but i have decided to buy 4GB of the same ram and intern save my self sum money and put that money to some good use somewhere else on my computer.
