I have a very weird problem, and I can't seem to work out why. I've scoured the internet for references to it, but I can't find anything which mentions the symptoms I'm experiencing. I have several hard drives in my computer. The last one I bought is running on an IDE cable attached to a PCI/RAID card, since all four of the IDE connections from the motherboard were already in use. This most recent drive has two partitions. The problem I have is that in Windows Explorer, duplicate letters keep appearing for these partitions. It doesn't happen when I first open Explorer: at that point, everything is fine. The window may stay open for several hours with no problem. But at some point, there will be created a duplicate for each partition letter. If I leave the window open (which I always do, since my computer is permanently on), then over time more and more duplicate letters appear. If I close Windows Explorer and re-open it, then everything is reset back to normal. I don't know what is causing this phenomenon: I don't sit here checking the window every five seconds, so I don't know if there is any particular trigger which sets off a duplication. What I do know though is that the duplication only occurrs for the partition letters of the drive running from the PCI card; not for the original drives connected directly to the motherboard. Can anyone explain why this is happening? I'm using Windows XP Pro with SP2, and all drives are formatted in NTFS.
You might try (if you havent) checking the manufacturers PCI card website for FAQ'S or email them or even try Micosoft kbowledge base (again if you havent)! EDIT: You could also change the drive letters and see if that helps!
