DVD burneris confused

ok my new computer dvd burner is having gender issues.
I was copying my dvd collection to put into storage.
I did about ten discs but now my dvd burner thinks it is a cd burner.
whats going on? how can I fix this.
this has happened before on my old computer
 
What were the error messages that you got? what application were you using and does device manager show the drive as having a problem?

Please be more specific.

sorry.
well device manger reports no problem.
I am using one click dvd copy.
it now sees my dvd writer but gives me this error message
writeSector failed at sector 1986512(16)- code 05 2c 00 [Illegal request,command sequence error]

it burns muisc and data no problem
 
Not sure if this is the problem but try upgrading the firmware if possible, or uninstall and re-install the drive in device manager.

firmware your going to have to explain that to me?
I have tried going to device manager and unintalling the drives and then rebooting.
the thing about the drives is that they came with no drivers so I guess they were just windows drivers that were used
 
The Windows drivers are fine. Optical drives have been around long enough that the drivers are universal. Unless you're running DOS, you probably won't need a driver for the drive to function properly. Firmware is a piece of code stored on a EEPROM chip (or similar) on the drive that controls the values of the drive. Kinda what the BIOS is to a motherboard. As with anything, there's no perfect product, and sometimes newer firmware revisions address problems that have come up since the product's release. Anyway, it's worth looking into.

The other thing to try is different media. I know that using some cheap-o stuff is bad news. I've found Verbatim DVD+R discs are pretty good, particulary according to the guys over at CD Freaks.

However, I would try the firmware first, because, it's the cheapest solution. Read and follow the firmware flashing instructions and you'll be fine.

I disagree, I've used a lot of "cheap-o" writable media and I've never had a problem writing to them...my 2 cents.
